Thirty years ago, the world’s governments gathered in Beijing and made bold commitments to advance gender equality. The Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action (BPfA) was hailed as the most ambitious blueprint for women’s rights. But today, as we reflect on these promises, a stark reality emerges: progress has stalled, inequalities are deepening, and anti-rights movements are on the rise.
Oxfam’s latest report, “Personal to Powerful”, paints a sobering picture. Governments have not only failed to uphold their commitments, but systemic injustices—fueled by austerity, wealth inequality, and conservative agendas—are pushing back against hard-won rights. Women and marginalized groups continue to bear the brunt of these failures.
