Her Excellency Ambassador Priscilla Misihairabwi-Mushonga is a trailblazing Zimbabwean leader who has dedicated her life to advancing the rights and empowerment of women. Beginning her career as a journalist, at the age of 23, Priscilla was a pioneer of the women's movement in Zimbabwe in the 1990s, advocating for the recognition of African traditional culture's appreciation of women's roles, even as the HIV/AIDS crisis exacerbated gender inequalities.
Driven by her Afro-Feminist convictions, as a young woman, Priscilla made the bold decision to enter politics, joining the opposition party despite the challenges and violence that came with it. Over the course of her 21 years in parliament, she confronted numerous obstacles, including personal sacrifices such as sending her only child abroad for safety and forgoing the opportunity to have more children, understanding the toxic environment that could have hindered her efforts. In parliament she held positions as chairperson of the Women and Youth Affairs Portfolio Committee, a member of the Justice and Legal Parliamentary Affairs Committee and the Foreign Affairs and International Trade Committee. She was the first female chairperson of Parliament’s Public Accounts Committee from 2003-2008. Amongst her accolades she also received the Kofi Annan award.
Priscilla's unwavering dedication was evident in her groundbreaking initiatives. While in parliament, she brought "uncommon" topics like menstrual poverty to the forefront, leading to the removal of taxes on sanitary products and government funding for their distribution to marginalized girls. She also fought tirelessly for the constitutional quota for female parliamentarians to be implemented and advocated for policies allowing pregnant girls to return to school.
Despite facing challenges in both the public and private spheres, including the tragic loss of her husband and accusations of his murder, as well as inheritance battles that forced her to start anew, Priscilla's resilience and determination never faltered. Today, she serves as the Zimbabwean Ambassador to the Kingdom of Sweden, continuing her trailblazing journey in the diplomatic realm.
Priscilla Misihairabwi-Mushonga's story stands as a testament to the power of unwavering commitment, courage, and the ability to inspire meaningful change, even in the face of immense adversity. Her legacy as a champion for women's rights and a beacon of hope for generations to come is a celebration of the transformative power of Afro-Feminism and the remarkable achievements that can be attained when women are empowered to lead.
